10 Ideas for DIY Wedding Favours
By Hui-Min Khor
There are a million and one things to fuss over for your wedding, including the reception, the dress, the pre-wedding photo shoot, the wedding itself, the dinner, etc. Most people put wedding favours at the bottom of the to-do list. Some will leave it to the restaurant or caterer to propose and prepare the items. However, preparing your own wedding favours gives them a personal touch that tells your guests that you care.
This doesn’t mean that you have to make everything yourself, of course. For example, you can buy pretty bottles, delicate little paper boxes or little envelops to contain your DIY gifts. The most important thing is that your gifts are an expression of your sincere appreciation towards your wedding guests for sharing in the joy of your special day.
Here is a list of 10 DIY ideas for wedding favours:
1. Tasty cookies and cupcakes
Love to bake? Well, now you can share the fruits of your labour with your loved ones and friends, with some help of course. Bake up a storm with well-loved classics like chocolate chip cookies, jam tarts, butter cookies, almond crisps, your favourite cupcakes or your secret family recipe. Then, pack them in lovely little bottles, little boxes or plastic bags tied with ribbons.
2. Wholesome jam
More into cooking rather than baking? Well, this is just the right thing for you. Whip up some delicious home made jam, packed into little jars, ready for delighted guests to spread on their morning toast. You can make the all-time favourites like strawberry jam, marmalade or citrus jam, or come up with your own combination.
3. Healthy fruits and nuts
Are you the mascot of healthy living? Fear not, we have the right wedding favour for you. Give your guests healthy fresh fruits like apples, strawberries and cherries, dried fruits like apricots and figs, or nuts like almonds and pecans. Pack them in little paper bags or see-through muslin bags to take home as a healthy snack.
4. Home made muesli
An alternative wedding favour treat for the health-conscious couple – muesli in a bottle. Your guests can enjoy it for breakfast the next day.
5. Sweet treats
Have a sweet tooth and don’t mind the calories? Pack sweet treats in your wedding theme colour in pretty little bottles or bags and send them home with the guests.
Are you an environmentally-friendly couple? Do you make your own compost for your garden, engage in tree planting initiatives and support campaigns to stop the killing of endangered animals such as tigers, rhinoceroses and sharks? You can encourage your wedding guests to help green the earth by planting the seeds of your choice. You can give the seeds of your favourite flowers, vegetables, fruits or trees. However, do provide some simple instructions on how plant and care for the seedlings.
Here’s another idea for the environmentally-friendly couple – skip the seed-planting and give your guests little plants to decorate their living space, office or garden.
Are you the crafty kind? Well, you can join a soap-making class a few months before your wedding to learn the skills to make your own bath soap. Make it and pour it into moulds of your desired design.
9. Special bath salts/homemade scrubs
Love to mix up your own blend of bath salts or home made scrub? Whip some up for your guests. They will be delighted with their relaxing baths.
10. Christmas bauble
Having your wedding around Christmas time? Add to the festive cheer with Christmas bauble wedding favours. Tie them up with gift tags printed with your guests’ names and ribbons for a personal touch.
