How to Choose Your Dai Kam Jie (大妗姐)

Due to overwhelming inquiry and request from our beloved fans and members, we have put together some information for you to search for your ideal Dai Kam Jie. For brides who would like to recommend or review their Dai Kam Jie, please do so here. Watch the tradition here!

Traditionally, the ‘Dai Kam Jie’ is a female either hired by the bride’s family, or is a relative of the bride’s side, who is considered an ‘auspicious’ lady (with living spouse and children). Nowadays, the ‘Dai Kam Jie’, also known as wedding or chaperone, is a professional practice, where the practitioners have to achieve a certain level of competency in their skills and knowledge before they could qualify to handle an actual wedding ceremony.

How to choose your Dai Kum Jie:

  1. Pleasant appearance
  2. Quick thinking and observant
  3. Good with speech
  4. Well-versed in traditions, ceremonies and important customs

Their Roles and Tasks

The most important part of a wedding chaperone is to guide the couple through all the traditional customary ceremonies and rituals, particularly during the day of the wedding. Here are some parts of a wedding that may requires the help of a Dai Kam Jie. However, do discuss with your Dai Kam Jie first before the engagement as some Dai Kam Jie only provide a few of the optional services:

  • Betrothal Ceremony – Where she will help prepare the items of significance for exchange of gifts
  • Dowry
  • Installing the Bridal Bed
  • Initiating the hair-dressing ritual for the bride
  • Prepare all the necessary items for the wedding ritual
  • Assisting the bride during her journey to the groom’s house
  • Interacting with the guests and elderly, especially during tea ceremony

Throughout the ceremony, the wedding chaperon will be saying auspicious words and greetings, and if there is any uneventful happening, or a guest who came up with a less-auspicious word, it will be up to the chaperon to ‘save the day’ with another auspicious remark, while keeping the merry mood of the wedding intact.

Do’s and Don’t s of choosing your Dai Kam Jie

1. Morning only or full-day?

Unless you need a Dai Kam Jie to coordinate another tea ceremony during dinner, else it really  doesn’t worth it to spend that money. But you should know, as of 2010 November, the market price of Dai Kam Jie is about RM450 for morning session only, and about RM600 for full-day. You may not need a Dai Kam Jie for the dinner since the restaurant will include emcee for dinner and some couples had their own friends as emcee.

2. Meet your Dai Kam Jie and discuss thoroughly on service provided

If you do not want the Dai Kum Jie to talk too much irrelevant stuff during your wedding, you better make yourself clear on what are the services he/she will be providing. Do speak to your Dai Kam Jie first to understand how knowledgeable is she in the wedding traditions.

3. No extra Angpow

You do not need to pay your Dai Kum Jie additional ang pow besides the quoted fees. However, giving extra angpow is totally personal preference. If you think that this is a good implication, then just give.

4. Do not disturb the gaming session

You may tell the Dai Kam Jie about gaming time before hand and ask him/her to help remind instead of keep on commanding the Ji Muis open door. Tell your Dai Kam Jie upfront to avoid her from stealing the show.

You can find a directory of Dai Kam Jie here. Please leave your comments and reviews of any of the Dai Kam Jie you have used here!

The Vow – Part 2

The Proposal

DSC_1347

The very first homework was to find the ring. After a long search, I was deciding between buying a ready made ring or to customise one. Well, I had finally decided on a custom-made proposal ring with our initials H&W on the monture. I love the word H&W. It represents not only Hann & Wen but also Husband & Wife; Happy Wedding…

At the point of time, she was doing her advanced studies in Melbourne. I popped over to surprise her during her tutorials. I succeed of course 😀

Everything went smoothly and I managed to get my ring sorted out before the trip. I succeed in pranking her in her campus and I had only wished the success level would continue till the end. My birthday fell on the first day of Easter Break (which was during the planned trip to Melbourne), we both made the effort to dressed up formally and booked a place for two at a fine-dining restaurant.
3159w 1138 DSC_0971
Here’s the best part:
The restaurant was fully booked (Yeap. Easter night!). We were ushered to a table next to a group of family of kids. It was noisy, really. I was sad and frustrated. There’s no window of opportunity for me to propose in such a noise level. It’s ruined. I was thinking to have it done another time.
I spotted an Easter bunny chocolate (the one in foils) on our table. So I tied the ring on bunny when she was away. That moment, I prayed and prayed so hard that she would notice the ring before the end of the dinner. Unfortunately, my prayers were not answered. We were done with our dinner and was about to leave.
At that point of desperation, I went crazy and handed over the bunny to her and said the four magic words. She didn’t hear me (thanks to the crowd). My face, neck and ear were flushing red. My voice was shaky.
It felt as if I’ve screwed up the proposal, and yet she humbly and tearfully said yes.
And of course, this “well-planned” proposal will always be a playful banter to me. She won’t stop teasing me, not anytime soon!

The Vow – Part 1

The Story
3159w 0206c
We both attended the same high school, but it wasn’t the start of our story until uni days. After high school, we both left separately to Perth to study. It wasn’t love at the first sight! We had a mutual friend, Cheryl and was known to one another as Cheryl’s friend.
IMG_1005
We kick-started the friendship pretty badly. We had bad impressions over one another. We were like “Oh, he/she is Cheryl’s good friend who is now in the same university as me.”
I first met her at the very first lecture of my freshman year. She was incredibly fashionably looking, but arrogant as a whole. She refused to even acknowledge my presence. Not a single hi or bye. And yet, slowly and steadily.. we talked.
IMG_1031 IMG_0999 IMG_1012
Well, the best part about studying abroad is that we get to spend a lot of time with our friends. We go out at odd hours and had such a happy life. We are inseparable. We did our assignments and had lunch together almost on a daily basis. I will then walk her home, which was only a few blocks away from the campus.
We chatted a lot of MSN messenger (don’t laugh! It was the good old days where MSN was far more popular than Whatsapp is today) every single night. I was drawn to her charisma. She is an incredibly caring, kind-hearted and down to earth person. And…. we started dating.
IMG_1010 IMG_1009 IMG_1006 IMG_1013
Over the course of 7 years of our relationship, we fell apart and came back stronger, hand in hand. Early last year, I made up my mind to spend the rest of my life with her.
And so, the planning of the proposal begun! Take a look on what happened next.

Up to day of our ROM

DSC_1013

We had our wedding photoshoot in Perth. That’s where we spent the happiest days together for four memorable years. We just simply love the weather, the colour of the sky in Perth and that little blue boathouse next to our comapus which we used to pass by everyday to uni.

3159w 0258cThe Bride’s Attire
We had two dresses for my missus; one for the ceremony and one for luncheon.

The first dress is a custom-made mullet dress which is made to match the garden wedding.
The second dress is a simple white dress with bits of sequins from ForeverNew.

As for her footwear, we decided on a beautiful pair of Christian Louboutin Pigalle 120 pumps multi-colour heels.

The Groom’s Attire

I have decided to customise my grey suit to match with all my groomsmen. I have also another suit from Givenchy FW13 for the wedding dinner.
As for my footwear, we decided on Patent Oxford Shoes from Saint Laurent.

I know that she had always wanted a garden wedding, and I gave her this.
We will be hosting our wedding banquet together with my elder brother;s at the end of this year. My dad wanted it to be like this. I was really eager to having my solemnisation ceremony, just for me.

Today, I take my place as your husband.
As we make one of two, whatever lies ahead, good or bad, we will face together.
We will respect each other, commit to live our lives together for all the days to come, for good & ill.
Distance may test us for a time, but I promise we will overcome it, like we always do.
Because I love & cherish you.
So, I want to share this world with you.
