Why Are Malaysian Couples Getting A Divorce

divorce-03

The latest statistics by JAKIM (Department of Islamic Development, Malaysia) showed that 77 Muslim couples divorce daily. The National Registration Department also recorded an increase in divorce for non-Muslim couples from 2008-2012 (from 6,573 to 9,020 cases).

To understand further, The Rakyat Post spoke to psychiatrist Dr. Sumeet Kaur on the divorce trends happening in Malaysia and what are the factors that trigger this decision. She mentions that the major cause for divorce is financial because couples tend to find themselves arguing over money matters. One of them might not agree to how the other is spending or saving.

Also, infidelity is one of the causes of divorce. Not only is physical cheating included, flirting with other women or men online is also consider another way of cheating too. Last but not least, children can also cause divorce for parents have different parenting styles or are forced by their in-laws to adhere to a certain way of teaching their own children.

Studies have shown that the happiness of marriage happens five years after you’ve tied the knot. This is why it is important to seek for therapy if you sense some cracks in your marriage. Counselling is another good way to sort things out with your partner for the better future of your children. After all, children will be affected if parents do not divorce properly. Some grow up to be angry and sad children but those with a healthy upbringing will in turn be easy to manage.

Non-Muslim couples can get help from counsellors and therapists from private practices that you can find online or through recommendations while Muslim couples can approach the State Islamic Affairs Department which provides free counselling.
